At Day 0 my colleagues send me to amazon go. The self-service shopping experience. I didn’t mind the experience. But the sandwich wasn’t the best I ever had. Instead I found the vending machine at CAFEX quite impressive.

My 5 take-aways from Day 1 #Think2019:

  • Wearable Robots will first go on and later under our skins, therefore augmenting human performance. Thank you Conor Walsh
  • No. 1 success factor for enterprise Design Thinking: have a designer remain on the team. Sean Pizel
  • Must learn more about quantum computing- just amazing Dario Gil
  • You can’t start early enough with purpose. And Taylor Richardson started at the age of 9 to shoot for Mars and diversity.
  • No AI without IA (information Architecture), powerful presence by Ginni Rometty, CEO of IBM

Rainy Day 2 at #Think2019 with my 5 thoughts to think:

  1. Computational Creativity in product design is not a fantasy but reality for many categories. And I would add: it can help overcome bias in design, too.
  2. Two impressive IBM innovations, the Verifier and VolCat are best examples for Phydgital, true world problems can not be solved by Apps only.
  3. Although 80% of enterprise data is not accessible, it does not mean we have to use AI only to optimize processes and automate everything. I encourage to use AI for true innovations.
  4. Broad AI is only 3-5 years away and will make things smarter – in a human perspective
  5. We all know: Software is eating the world, well here they say AI is eating software- for breakfast

Day 3, #Think2019 started with a beautiful quote from Chelsea Clinton: “Optimism is a moral choice” and ended with Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen making their point: there is an art of falling – and getting back up. And in between? Do we have to worry if people stress how much they work on making #AI trustworthy, transparent, safe and to augment humans not substitute? No questions, #IBM has a legacy of coming up with innovations that you would not expect from them: like a recycling process for PET bottles. In their 100 years history, they have a proven DNA for mastering change. Just check their Design Thinking initiative, as a recent testimony. Overall I wondered: Is there enough focus on AI ethics? Especially in designing for AI? Because if we follow Paul Rand’s quote: “Everything is design. Everything.” Shouldn’t design be the starting point for ethics?

Day 4: Honored for the invitation by IBM to speak at #Think2019 on how to align #AI and teams for competitive advantage. Unfortunately my co-speaker Ralph Siepmann couldn’t make it to San Francisco but our key message was: Don’t try to predict the future but imagine with all your assets a desirable outcome. Key ingredients: your human fellows, Data and AI. For this, Design Thinking needs to be enhanced and new tools such as “AI empathy test”, “AI variation booster” and “AI interaction play” need to be implemented.
Thanks IBM for a great week and an unforgettable experience!
