Sustainabubble
An insulated, jargon-heavy environment, often found at sustainability conferences, ESG meetings, or in the depths of corporate sustainability departments, where professionals unconsciously assume a shared fluency in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) terminology.
Inside the Sustainabubble, complex frameworks like Scope 3 emissions reporting, materiality assessments, or life cycle analyses are casually tossed around in conversation. Attendees are expected to have read the latest IPCC reports, be fluent in acronyms like GHG, SFDR, TCFD, and CSRD, and express passionate opinions on whether double materiality is overhyped or underappreciated.
While well-intentioned, the Sustainabubble can become an echo chamber, unintentionally alienating outsiders and reinforcing insular thinking. It highlights the need for clearer communication and greater inclusivity in the sustainability space.
